Teens are generally not afflicted with hair loss (alopecia). The most
common form of hair loss that we've probably noticed is age-related and
is in part hereditary — male-pattern baldness or female-pattern baldness
(medically known as androgenic alopecia). Most men affected are around
30 years of age. However, often boys in their mid-teens are affected.
Their hairlines begin to recede at the temples, thinning out at the top
of the head. Women generally aren't affected as severely and not until
they are well in their advanced years. Girls, however, may sometimes be
affected early with a general thinning of the hair and should consult
their physician if so.
There are a few other more temporary forms of hair loss that might be
found in teenagers. One of the factors causing transient effects, that a
lot of people will be able to provide examples of, is stress. Hair loss
often follows at the heels of stress, especially when related to an
illness. The key is to work on mechanisms to cope with stress. And when
being prescribed medications, don't be afraid to ask what the side
effects are. Certain medicines for depression and acne can sometimes
lead to hair loss.
Poor diet — one deficient in protein, vitamins and minerals such as
iron, zinc etc., in addition to eating disorders such as anorexia and
bulimia, can be another cause. A diet rich in leafy green veggies, egg
whites, meat and Vitamin B supplements will help in this situation. Keep
an eye on the weighing scale, especially if on the lower side and avoid
crash dieting.
Adopt better hair care habits. Stay away from excessive dyeing, chemical
treatments, blow-dryers, straighteners or curling irons etc. If you are
keeping your hair pulled back in buns or braids too often, you need to
let them down to prevent permanent damage.
Hair loss, though cosmetic, is an awful thing to happen, and
particularly at an age when one is self-conscious as it is. For
androgenic alopecia, over the counter medications — namely minoxidil
sold as a spray or shampoo has shown to help in a small percentage of
people. However, keep in mind that both hair loss and growth might take
a few months to manifest. There are also many hair myths e.g that a 100
strokes with your hair brush at bedtime can improve hair growth; this is
just a myth since excessive brushing might even be harmful.

Health risk from fish pedicures

People with weak immune systems or underlying medical conditions are at increased risk of infection from controversial fish pedicures, experts have warned.
Questions have been raised in recent months over the beauty craze which sees customers place their feet in tanks of water containing dozens of tiny Garra Rufa fish which nibble on dead skin.
While the pampering carries a "very low" risk for healthy clients, those with conditions including diabetes and psoriasis have now been advised against the indulgence.
The pedicures - which are popular in Asia - have been banned in some US states, including Florida, Texas, New Hampshire and Washington amid fears that infections could spread through open wounds.
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) today issued new guidance after a panel found fish tank water contained a number of micro-organisms and that infections could be transmitted either from fish to person (during the nibbling process), water to person (from the bacteria which can multiply in water), or person to person (via water, surrounding surfaces and the fish).
While it advised certain individuals to avoid treatment, it said any risk was "very low" for healthy clients when spas adhered to strict codes of cleanliness.
Dr Hilary Kirkbride, consultant epidemiologist at the HPA, said: "Provided that good standards of hygiene are followed by salons, members of the public are unlikely to get an infection from a fish spa pedicure, however the risk will be higher for certain people.
"This is why we feel it's important for salons to ensure the client has no underlying health conditions that could put them at risk, and that a thorough foot examination is performed to make sure there are no cuts, grazes or existing skin conditions that could spread infection."
Garra Rufa fish - a type of toothless carp - have become increasingly popular in salons across Britain, in part because of their novelty value.
Dr Paul Cosford, director of health protection services at the HPA, said the risk posed by the fish tanks could be kept to a minimum if spas followed "strict standards of cleanliness".
"If a member of the public is concerned about the level of cleanliness of a salon they visit, they should report this to their local environmental health department," he said.
Anyone considering a fish pedicure can help reduce health risks by ensuring cuts or infections on the feet or legs are given time to heal before treatment.
Clients are also urged to wait at least 24 hours after having a leg wax or shaving to minimise the chances of contracting an infection.
The HPA guidance has been endorsed by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health and the Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland.

Special applications for toddlers are now widely available, such as Baby Touch: Peekabo or Fish Games, the average claim charged educative. Some even promise useful applications to improve hand-eye coordination and focusing ability of infants to toddlers age 2.5 years.
The parents were not worried about letting their baby fun tinkering with gadgets because they can make their kids smart fast. Preoccupation of children to parents gadgets are also utilized for a moment to rest or do something else. The term is a digital babysitter.
However, the iPad Is that as safe for children's development? Recently experts from The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) advises parents returning to limit the time they are toddlers, especially those who were aged less than 2 years, in front of the television screen.
